Genre: Drama

Starring: Jamie Bell, Jamie Draven, Gary Lewis

Billy Elliot (Bell) is a simple boy living in Northern England, whose father (Lewis) and brother (Draven) work as miners. The movie is set against the 1984 miners strike, wherein both of Billy's family members are taking part, which makes the household situation tense and reduces family income. Billy doesn't enjoy the boxing lessons he is forced to take and somehow develops an affinity for ballet dancing. His father doesn't like his choice, and Billy has to resort to taking secret training from his ballet teacher. When the secret cannot be kept hidden any longer and when Billy gets admission into a famous ballet school in London, his father has to accept the fact and also realises that he must do something to restore the family income if he has to fulfill his sons dreams. The movie shows how some people have a notion that certain sports are meant for girls and certain for boys, and trying to mix them is against the order of nature. The movie focuses on conservative rural families and how it takes a lot to create a modern open society.
