Set in Nazi Germany during the Second World War, the movie tells the tale of a high-profile Nazi soldier (Thewlis) and his family life. He is asked to relocate to the German country and is made in-charge of the nearby Jewish prison camp. His son Bruno (Butterfield) feels lost and without any companion, starts wandering. He finds an unknown path from the back of his house which leads directly to the prison camp. He be-friends a young Jewish prisoner of his age, Schmuel (Scanlon) and suddenly his life becomes more interesting. His mind being very immature, he doesn't know what is going on in the camp and why the prisoners are there to begin with. The movie goes on to narrate the horrid story of the war and how Bruno's lack of understanding of things ends up giving him and his family too much trouble than what they had asked for. The movie is slow but not altogether uninteresting. It gives a different side of the misery attached with war.
